Math Problems

Updated: October 2014

Students with a mathematics disorder have problems with various math skills which are significantly below average considering the student’s age, intelligence, and education. Some symptoms may include: difficulty with times-tables, confusing the signs: +, −, ÷ and ×. Inability to tell which of two numbers is the larger, reliance on 'counting-on' strategies, e.g., using fingers, rather than any more efficient mental arithmetic strategies, difficulty with everyday tasks like checking change and reading analog clocks, just to name a few. Poor math skills cause problems with the student's academic success and other important areas in the student's life.

Testing for mathematics disorder

It is very important that an individualized psychoeducational test be administered to look for signs of mathematical deficits associated with this condition, in addition of examining background information such as samples of (math) school work and test scores.  Child Testing's diagnostic process is in compliance with federal law which includes, but is not limited to: standardized testing (i.e. IQ test, individual achievement test), a clinical review of the student's developmental, medical, educational, and family history, reports of test scores, teacher observations, and responses to adequate academic interventions. READ MORE ABOUT OUR DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS. Testing is done in your own home by a licensed school psychologist. Parents will receive a comprehensive, customized and detailed report describing your child's strengths and weaknesses, not just a computer print out. We serve all Florida counties and cities, including: the entire Tampa Bay area, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Panama City, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm, Boca Raton and many more. Please call for more details.

Treatment

Treatment for mathematics disorder may include various approaches such as individual tutoring focused on the specific areas of weakness, placement in special math classrooms with expert math teachers, and other educational aids that focus on specific math skills. Our report will include many recommendations directed at helping the student overcome the barriers associated with Mathematics Disorder.
