The Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA)

The purpose of this scholarship is to enable parents to personalize the education of their child with unique abilities. This scholarship is delivered as an education savings account (ESA) that you can direct toward a combination of programs and approved providers. This includes schools, therapists, specialists, curriculum, technology, a college savings account and more.


Quick facts:

  • Available to students age 3 through grade 12 or age 22, whichever comes first, who have a specific diagnosis
  • $10,000 average award for an FES-UA scholarship
  • Funds may be used for tuition and fees for a private school, homeschooling options, therapies, tutoring and more

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible to receive a scholarship a student must meet the following eligibility criteria: Be a resident of the state of Florida. Is eligible to enroll in kindergarten through grade 12 in a public school in this state or will be 3 or 4 years old before September 1; Has a disability as defined below:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Intellectual disability
  • Phelan-McDermid syndrome
  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Spina bifida
  • Being a high-risk child
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Williams syndrome (rare diseases which affect patient populations of fewer than 200,000 individuals in the United States, as defined by the National Organization for Rare Disorders)
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Deaf
  • Visually impaired
  • Traumatic brain injured
  • Hospital or homebound (includes a student who has a medically diagnosed physical or psychiatric condition or illness, as defined by the state board in rule, and who is confined to the home or hospital for more than 6 months).
  • Dual sensory impaired (as defined by rules of the State Board of Education and evidenced by reports from local school districts.
  • Is the subject of an IEP written in accordance with rules of the State Board of Education or with the applicable rules of another state.
  • Has received a diagnosis of a disability from a physician who is licensed under chapter 458 or chapter 459, a psychologist who is licensed under chapter 490, or a physician who holds an active license issued by another state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Hope Scholarship

These scholarships provide financial assistance for private school tuition and related costs or for public transportation. The Hope Scholarship is available to K-12 grade public school students who have experienced bullying, assault, threats or other violent acts.

Quick facts:

  • Available to K-12th students with a qualifying incident
  • $7,700 average award for private school scholarships
  • $750 minimum for transportation scholarships
  • Includes private school tuition and related fees or public school transportation
  • Eligibility based on reported and documented incidents

New Worlds Scholarship

New Worlds Reading Scholarship Accounts support your struggling K-5th grade child in becoming a stronger reader. This scholarship can be used for fees related to tutoring and literacy programs along with reading instructional materials, curriculum and more. Financial assistance is provided through a $500 education savings account (ESA).

Quick facts:

  • Funds may be used for part-time tutoring, summer and after-school literacy programs, instructional materials, curriculum and more
  • Available to K-5th grade students
  • $500 education savings account
  • Eligibility based on the student’s performance on the English Language Arts (ELA) test during the prior year
