Gifted Programs In Florida

Florida defines gifted students as students who have superior intellectual development and are capable of high performance. Each school district serves gifted students through local plans that provide academic and social emotional support.  There is different criteria a student must meet in order to enter an academically gifted program. One of the requirements is to undergo IQ testing to show they are in the superior range. Typically a full scale IQ of 130 or above classifies a student as gifted. However in some school districts ESL/ESOL students who also qualify for Plan B (reduced lunch) are entitled to enter the gifted program with lower IQ scores (e.g. 115-120).

Referral for Individual Evaluation
Some children are referred for an individual evaluation because they show a high ability to reason or a rapid rate of learning as compared to their peers, or they are referred based on their high scores on state or district assessments. Generally, several strategies are tried to give these children more opportunities to progress in the regular classroom. If these strategies are not effective, the parent or the school staff will then refer the child for an evaluation to determine if they are eligible for ESE gifted services.

Individual Evaluation
An individual evaluation is a way of collecting information about a child’s learning needs, strengths, problems and interests. The evaluation may include tests, observations, interviews or other ways of gathering information. In order for a child to be individually evaluated, the parent or guardian must give written consent. Often times, evaluations through the school is a process that takes a long time causing many gifted students to remain without proper placement which can in turn lead to boredom and underachievement.  Other times testing in the school can be distracting or cause test anxiety in some students. In these cases private testing is recommended. Child-Testing offers at-home private testing which has been shown to improve test performance.
